Defining Terms: Replacement Culture

Replacement culture treats athletes as labor rather than stakeholders. It assumes there is always someone younger, cheaper, or more compliant waiting to take their place.

This mindset helps explain why athletes who challenge injustice are often labeled distractions and why institutions resist athlete leadership beyond the field of play.

When an athlete expresses their views or speaks out, they meet with resistance and told not to be political or to do their job.

This denies their individuality, humanity, and voice.
