Speaking Topics
The 1968 Olympic Protest, Muhammad Ali refusing to get drafted into the Vietnam War, and Althea Gibson becoming the first black woman to win the Grand Slam title were some of the most iconic events of the Civil Rights Movement. But once the movement was over, athlete activism went into dormancy. It wasn’t until recent movements such as #BlackLivesMatter that athlete activism was revitalized. Today, high-profile athletes have not only become invigorated to protest social injustice, but they are also now pushing for policy reform. This talk discusses a new era called, the sport justice movement. In this talk, I will discuss the following:
-
The transcendence of sport into the larger conversation of racial and social injustice.
-
How more high-profile athletes have utilized their platform to engage in policy change like never before
-
How sport organizations have worked to collaborate with athletes on the quest for social justice
-
Where does the movement go from here?
